Breakthrough Propulsion Demands a New Cockpit Paradigm

In November 2010, Agency released a reference document that, on its surface, appears to be a routine study of future cockpit designs. Yet the scenarios it contemplates are anything but routine: spacecraft propelled by mastery over gravitational and inertial forces, capable of accelerating at levels far beyond human endurance, and even traveling faster than light. Produced under the agency's Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications (AAWSA) Program, the report—titled Cockpits in the Era of Breakthrough Flight—does not claim that such technologies exist or are imminent.

Instead, it uses informed speculation grounded in public-domain research, particularly the 2009 volume Frontiers of Propulsion Science, to ask a forward-looking question: if breakthrough propulsion physics becomes a reality, how must the human-machine interface inside the cockpit evolve to keep pace?
