Programmable Matter: A New Frontier in Aerospace Materials

In December Agency released a reference document titled Aerospace Applications of Programmable Matter, part of its Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications program. The white paper, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request and published by The Black Vault, outlines a future in which spacecraft components are no longer fixed at manufacture but can alter their physical and optical properties on demand. The central thesis is that materials capable of changing behavior in response to remote instructions could transform satellite operations: a failed sensor, a blown fuse, or a browned-out solar array might be remedied not by launching a replacement but by uploading new software.

Similarly, a spacecraft designed for one mission could be repurposed for unforeseen tasks without physical intervention.
