DIA Report Explores Plasma and MHD Propulsion Potential
In fiscal Agency produced a reference document under its Advanced Aerospace Weapons System Applications (AAWSA) Program that surveys a class of propulsion and power concepts built around ionized gases, or plasmas, and the interaction of those conducting fluids with magnetic fields, a discipline known as magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The report, released through a Freedom of Information Act request to The Black Vault archive, is framed as a nonsubstantive but authoritative technical review rather than an operational assessment. Its central thesis is that plasma and MHD technologies could, in principle, push aerospace vehicles beyond the performance boundaries of conventional propulsion, aerodynamic control, and onboard power generation.
