Condon Committee Radar Cases and the Unexplained Residue
The University That concession, buried in a study widely remembered for its skeptical posture, is the central problem this article examines. The AP hypothesis was not asserted casually. A statistical analysis of 19 probable AP cases found that all were associated with clear or nearly clear weather, and all but two occurred at night.
Atmospheric conditions in the contested cases were, by the document's own account, favorable for AP. But the report also records two considerations that argue against the hypothesis: the targets tracked behaved in a more rational, continuous manner, and covered a greater altitude range, than AP echoes of the type usually observed; and if they were AP echoes, they should have appeared around LST when the profile was obviously more favorable for AP than the 2200 LST profile.
