AARO Resolves Eglin UAP as Likely Balloon

The All-domain Anomaly Defense closed the book on one of its more closely watched cases with a formal resolution dated 14 October 2023. The case, designated "Eglin UAP," concerned a military pilot's report of four potential unidentified anomalous phenomena over the Eglin Air Force Base training range off the coast of Florida on 26 January 2023. AARO's conclusion was unambiguous in its direction, if measured in its certainty: the reported object very likely was an ordinary object and was not exhibiting anomalous or exceptional characteristics or flight behaviors.

The office placed moderate confidence in that assessment, citing the limited data available. What makes the resolution notable is not any exotic finding but the opposite. AARO assessed the object as a lighter-than-air (LTA) object — enumerating possibilities that include a large form-factor balloon, a meteorological balloon, a large Mylar balloon, or a large, commercial, outdoor, helium-filled lighting balloon.
